LoveBlog - The Illumination

“Shine your light and make a positive impact on the world; there is nothing so honorable as helping improve the lives of others.”  ― Roy T. Bennett

When I was a little girl, my uncle Charlie would sometimes babysit my five siblings and me.  He would put on his favorite show M.A.S.H and make us watch it with him.  I hated this show with a passion.  Mainly because, at eight years old I resented having to do anything I didn’t want to do, and the show’s subject matter and humor was lost on me.  My uncle Charlie was blind and because he was blind, I thought I could sneak away and not have to endure what I believed to be an oh-so-boring show.  I would softly and slowly get up from my seat on the sofa and tip toe out of the tv room.  Half way to freedom I would hear, “Sit down!”

“Gahhhh!  How do you know I’m up?  You’re blind!” I would shout, angry and frustrated.

His reply “I’m blind, not deaf. Now sit. ”

If you’re an old-school Nantucketer, you may even have known my uncle Charlie.  Named after his father (and my Grandfather) Charlie Flanagan, he was cut from the same cloth: Good sense of humor, a solid sense of right and wrong, and brought up with the desire to help others.  My uncle contracted Type I Diabetes as a very young child.  It put a lot of strain on his body.  As his eyesight deteriorated, he decided to have retinal surgery. The doctor told him to not lift anything heavier than five pounds, and to  go easy on himself.  While recuperating from surgery, he was awakened by a horrific car crash outside my grandparents’ house.  Being an EMT and firefighter, he immediately ran outside to help.  My uncle made a snap decision to put someone else’s life above his own.  There were three people in the burning car.  Without hesitation, my uncle pulled one person from the car and was pulling a second passenger out over the front seat when the Fire Department arrived. The stress of lifting the men cost him his eyesight.  My uncle left this world years ago while still a young man.  Still there are reminders of him that linger: books in Braille, his walking cane, and his medical bracelet.

I don’t know what it’s like to go blind, to see the vibrant colors of life, the face of someone I love or the beauty of nature one day and then the next, darkness.  I’ll be honest, I do often take for granted that I have working eyes. Having sight is something many of us take for granted. Reality is, we don’t understand something until we experience it for ourselves, nor do we understand the loss of something so important until it’s gone.  I recently watched The Illumination, a film by TNP Ideafilm.  The film is about Gordon Gund, an American businessman and owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers.  He and his wife Lulie Gund are working together to cure blindness.  To me, this film is more than a story of traversing Point A to Point B. The film’s name speaks for itself, The Illumination,  which means light that shines on something.  I ugly-cried throughout the film for it illuminated a part of something within me. I won’t share exactly what because I don’t want to influence your experience.  When you see this film, perhaps you’ll have a different experience.  I will say this film is beautiful, peaceful, uplifting and a love story.  It is astonishing to me how such a short film could pack all of this into under twenty minutes.   Films such as these help us to experience someone else’s viewpoint, to lift the veil of someone else’s story to reveal how deep it may go within ourselves.  It’s a beautiful gift that we have people in the world who are willing to share their stories.  This film and the love between Gordon and his wife Lulie struck a mighty cord within me, especially in regard to my uncle.  If you know me, you know I love love, and always want to bring more love into the world.  To me, this is more than a great love story. It shows how deep love can be when two people come together for the greater good of all.    This inspiring encounter of Gordon and Lulie Gund and the work they are doing to help cure blindness illuminates the love you can see between these two beautiful souls.  It’s truly remarkable.  Not only does it make you believe the good in the world, but it is a reminder of what truly matters in life.  To know there are people who are bringing more love into the world through different avenues and achieving a goal is magic. It makes me think of the words of Naren Nagin, “Many have sight but few have vision.”

I invite you to come see this movie and experience this remarkable story for yourself.  There will be one showing at 4:45pm-5:45pm Friday June 23rd at the Dreamland Main Theater.  This movie has won numerous awards, which includes Audience Favorite.  After the screening, Gordon Gund, Lulie Gund and Tom Scott, who directed the film, will be answering questions and discussing the film.  If you’re interested, click here to purchase your tickets.  Be sure to put my name, Dorothy Stover, in the ‘Friend of’ box.  I am almost certain this movie is going to sell out fast and I want to make sure I get the word out to you so you can come join in The Illumination.  It’s a Nantucket Love Bubble moment you have the opportunity to be a part of.  The $15 ticket guarantees you a seat for what’s sure to be an uplifting screening of The Illumination and the discussion with Gordon Gund, Lulie Gund and Tom Scott.

I love now and always have passion.  I love when someone believes in something with their whole being.  I love when someone sets goals, even if they never come close to achieving them.  I love dreamers, risk-takers and those that don't color between the lines.  As someone that has tried and failed on many occasions as well as succeeded in business, health, and all areas in life, I understand what feeling the great lows and great highs are like.

What am I loving right now?  3E Escapes.  The focus of this retreat is work, wealth and wellbeing.  Taken from their website: A 3-DAY RETREAT FOR ENTREPRENEURS LOOKING TO CREATE HARMONY IN 3 CORE AREAS: WORK, WEALTH, AND WELL-BEING. 40 Days of Love - Day 10 - Meditation & Chakra Clearing + Giveaway

image.jpg

Something that has changed my life is meditation and taking care of my chakras. I want to shout from the roof-tops how much my life has changed and spread the word how you can do it too!

What I looked like over a year ago.

Tired all the time- emotionally, physically and mentally drained. Bouts of anger. Easily blown off the handle. Lack of understanding of othersLack of compassion for others. Trouble with mindfulness.Anxiety.Caring what other people thought of me. Lack of strength and fortitude in my beliefs.Weight issues.Feeling lost.Worrying all the time about the past, present and future.

In short, this sums up what was happening in my world a little over a year ago. I was also a fairly positive, happy person to be around but I had so much inner conflict.  So did others around me, so I just assumed it was normal.  Today I don't even recognize the person I once was, and I am so grateful for the change.  This week, I'd like to share with you how this transition came about. It was set into motion by a series of events that allowed me to be more receptive to change, which in turn led me down a very distinct and enlightening path.

July 2014

The Nantucket Yoga Festival 2014. I walked out of that weekend in what I refer to as the love bubble.  It was truly incrediable!  This weekend allowed me to be more receptive and ready to move to the next step in change.

On Thursday of that week, Cate Raphael invited me to have an Akashic Records reading. She asked me if I would like to have my chakras cleared, but I didn't know what to think because I had never heard of chakras! I said 'yes' with hesitation.  She had me hold a bunch of stones and off we went. When I left, I felt amazing! I felt my world had changed, and truly it had. My worries melted away, and I was left with this euphoric feeling that I wanted all day, everyday. My problem was I didn't know where to go from there. I researched for a bit, finding out that the chakras are energy points within you but got off track going any further. Then Cate posted something about Belinda Davidson and the School of the Modern Mystic. It seemed like the direction I wanted to take after a lot of thought and mediating on it, so I decided to sign up for Belinda's course.

My life now, less than a year later, feels peaceful and in harmony. I feel I am capable of so much. I feel strong mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially. I feel like a bright light in the world and I am only getting stronger. I have gained patience while finding my life's purpose. I am secure in myself and my body. Which is huge for me because I always struggled with liking and loving my body. I have gained peace and strength in all aspects of my life. Most of all, I am happy! My relationships have improved, and I am able to protect myself so I am not affected by other people's energies. The course has taught me to heal myself, how to bring what I need into my life, and to find harmony in my life. My skin is clearer, (which is a huge bonus!) People see me and think I'm in my 20s not 30s and I was also able to heal and cure a troubling medical issue I've had since I was a teenager. The best part is that I accomplished this on my own with the guidance of the people at SOMM. That experience has been empowering in its own right.

I am writing this because I love how my life has changed from this simple thing of taking care of my chakras. I want this for everyone and I believe this can help anyone and everyone. Personally, I believe we should teach this course to our children to afford them this knowledge and these abilities at an early age.  I wish I learned all of this before becoming a teenager and an adult. I want people to feel that their lives are in balance, and that they are living their life's purpose. When something comes along that rocks their boat, they feel more than capable of handling it. I also want people to be able to manifest what they want and need into their lives effortlessly. I want each person in the world to feel like a bright light, to shine and to inspire others to shine.  This course teaches these things, and it is a fantastic place to start this amazing journey or continue your development.

Belinda has a chakra meditation for busy people and I would love for you to win this giveaway as well as the journey to the white meditation that will help raise for vibration to love and find peace within yourself.

 40 Days of Love – Day 6 – Nantucket

I believe Nantucket Island chooses people.  I believe if you’re living on, or visiting the island, you are here for a reason.  I believe the island can heal people.  I believe this island of Nantucket to be more powerful than we give it credit for.  I am a seventh generation Nantucketer.  I’ve seen photos of yesteryear.  I grew up on this picturesque island, watching the landscape change, but still seeing itsbeauty shine through witnessing the best sunrises and sunsets in the world.  Feeling the island change with the seasons, feeling her come alive in the spring and sleep during the winter.  Those who are on the island at any given time seem to tune in to the island’s natural clock.  Island time is real!  After living all over the United States, traveling abroad, and even after spending my childhood and teenage years here, Nantucket is the place I call home.  My home base is Nantucket and I love her!

I want to hear from you.  What do you think?  Is the island a living, breathing thing?  Do you think the island chooses people?

Peace, Love & Hugs,

Dorothy

Here are some photos I have taken from around the island.  I hope you enjoy!

 40 Days of Love – Day 4 – Nantucket Skin + Giveaway

Since I was a little girl, my fingernails have been important to me. I remember my Aunt Donna painting my nails at my grandmother’s kitchen table. I recall how happy I was and how beautiful I felt. I remember gliding down the stairs, just staring at my beautiful, freshly-painted nails. I felt like a princess.

Things have not changed much since I was a little girl. I still feel at my best when I have my nails painted. This act makes me feel put together. I’ve tried many brands over the years and I have a few favorites for sure. About two years ago, I began making changes to which products I use because of chemicals and by happenstance, I discovered Nantucket Skin’s Nail Polish line. It’s free of many of the chemicals you would find in other brands. I am shocked to see what some of these chemicals can do to the body.

Chemicals like these have been linked to hormone imbalances, weight gain and cancers:Formaldehyde, Camphor, DBP, Toulene, Triphenyl Phosphate

Luckily, Nantucket Skin is free of these, plus the nail polish itself is long lasting, foolproof to apply, and comes in beautiful colors. I especially love that each one has a fun Nantucket themed name. My favorites are; Nantucket Bride (A pinky white), Lobster Trap Takeout (a bright coral red), Last Call at The Box (classic red) and Cranberry Festival (a deep red).

I want you to fall in love with this nail polish line as much as I have. Enter to win a gift certificate to Nantucket Skin! Make sure to check out their website, www.NantucketSkin.com. You may purchase their nail polishes as well as their other amazing products. Enjoy!

Peace, Love & Hugs,

Dorothy
